of the Governor's comments in paragraph 13

of his covering despatch, to the effect that

attempts to effect this sort of reduction

have met with somewhat strenuous opposition

even from signatories of the present petition.

The petition winds up with a plea

for the payment of salaries in full and at

"the true relation to sterling", thus showing

that the petitioners have little real appreciation

of the difficulties of the Government.

Subject to obsons of C.S. D,

? Reply as proposed by the Governor,

adding that the petitioners should

be informed that the Secretary of

State notes that the fall in the

sterling value of the dollar has

in fact increased the burden of

taxation on the Colony by a sum

equivalent to that realized by the

salary levy; and that the petitioners'

suggestions as regards increased

taxation are receiving careful

consideration by the Government.
